FAX CENTER
Page Rotation Icons
The four page rotation icons shown below are now available while you are viewing a fax document in Fax Center. To rotate the page to a specific orientation, click the appropriate icon.
╩
GlobalFax OCR Icon
GlobalFax OCR is a GlobalFax software extension that you can use to extract text from faxes you receive. You can then edit the text using any application that has word-processing capabilities. Contact Global Village for more information about GlobalFax OCR. The GlobalFax OCR icon shown below appears when you view a fax document in Fax Center.
╩
Save As Menu Command
Ñ You can use the Save As command in the FaxCenter menu to save the contents of any text window (Fax Log list, Schedule list, and Received list) as a text file.
Ñ While viewing a fax file, you can use the Save As command to convert the entire fax file, or just the page you are viewing, to a different file format. The image file formats available are: MacPaint (72 DPI), PICT (72 DPI), PICT (200 DPI), PICT2 (200 DPI), and TIFF (200 DPI). When GlobalFax OCR is installed, text-based file formats are also available: TEXT, Database TEXT, Decolumnized TEXT, DCA/RTF, Excel, MacWrite 4.5, MacWrite 4.6, MacWrite 5.0, MacWrite II, Microsoft Word 3.0, Microsoft Word 4 & 5, Microsoft RTF, Wingz, WordPerfect 1.0, and WordPerfect 2.0. Refer to your GlobalFax OCR User╒s Guide for additional information about these file formats.
Ñ Because MacPaint pages have a fixed length, the bottom portion of long faxes saved in MacPaint format will be cut off. All other image file formats support variable length pages.
Ñ Machines without Color QuickDraw support (PowerBook 100) cannot create PICT2 format files. If you try to save a fax file in the PICT2 format on these machines, the PICT format will be used instead. No warning is given for this substitution.
Faster Fax Viewing
Anti-aliasing occurs automatically when you display a fax document, improving the image of a fax by making individual pixels between light areas and dark areas a gray color. You can use this feature if you are using a color or grayscale monitor that is set to four or more colors or grayscales.
Contrast Control
Contrast control is a new feature in FaxCenter 2.08. Using contrast control, you can adjust the contrast level of a fax document to make the contents more visible.
To change the contrast of a fax document:
1. Display a sent or received fax.
2. Press the up arrow key on your keyboard to make the fax document lighter.
or
Press the down arrow key on your keyboard to make the fax document darker.
Continue pressing the key until the quality of the fax is to your satisfaction.
Contrast control is much more effective on faxes that are sent in fine mode and/or originally had gray in them. Contrast control affects the fax you are viewing on the screen and fax sections copied to the clipboard. Contrast control does not affect the appearance of the fax when it is printed or is saved in a graphical format from Fax Center (such as MacPaint or PICT).
To save the contents of a fax document after changing the contrast:
1. Place the crosshair cursor in the upper-left corner of the fax document.
2. Click down and drag the cursor until the box encloses the region that you want to save or print.
3. Choose Copy from the Edit menu.
4. Open any graphics application or TeachText version 7.0 or later and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
You can now print or save the selection using the graphics application or TeachText.
POWERPORT CONTROL PANEL
Fax Speed Indication
Ñ When you send a fax document, a status bar appears in the menu bar indicating the speed of transmission for each page.
Ñ When you receive a fax document, a status bar appears in the menu bar indicating the speed of reception for each page.
Ñ When you view the Fax Log or a fax receipt, the speed that a document was sent or received appears for each entry.
APPLETALK REMOTE ACCESS¬ (ARA)
Ñ You can now send a fax while the ARA Answer Calls option is selected in the Remote Access Setup control panel. However, you will not be able to receive faxes while the ARA Answer Calls option is selected in the Remote Access Setup control panel.
Ñ Make sure that you select the correct ARA script from the ARA pop-up menu in the Remote Access Setup control panel. If you are using a PowerPort/Silver, PowerPort/Gold, or PowerPort/Mercury, select the ╥GV Mercury/Gold/Silver╙ script. If you are using a PowerPort/Bronze, select the ╥PowerPort/Bronze╙ script.
Ñ For credit card dialing, select the GV Mercury/Gold/Silver CCD script; for manual dialing, select the GV Mercury/Gold/Silver MD script; for ignore dial tone, select the GV Mercury/Gold/Silver IDT script. These scripts are located in the Remote Access Scripts folder in the PowerPort¬ Accessories folder.
SEND-FAX SETUP
If you are using a PowerPort/Mercury or PowerPort/Gold (MA) fax/modem, the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option appears at the bottom of the Send Fax Setup dialog box. When this option is selected, the PowerPort/Mercury or PowerPort/Gold (MA) fax/modem attempts to negotiate a 14,400 bps fax connection when sending and receiving faxes. When this option is not selected, the PowerPort/Mercury or PowerPort/Gold (MA) fax/modem attempts to negotiate a 9600 bps fax connection when sending a fax and a 14,400 bps fax connection when receiving a fax. The next section describes how this option should be set to achieve the best 14,400 bps fax performance with your PowerBook configuration.
Note: ╥MA╙ refers to the PowerPort/Gold firmware version.
To determine which PowerPort fax/modem model you are using:
1. Open Fax Center by choosing Fax Center from the Apple menu.
2. Hold down the Option key and click the word GlobalFax.
A list of configuration information, including model information, is displayed.
Sending and receiving faxes at 14,400 bps is a very intensive process that places heavy file system and background processing demands on your PowerBook computer. Factors that affect 14,400 bps fax performance are listed below.
PowerBook Model
Lower-performance Macintoshes, such as the PowerBook 100 are easily overwhelmed by the demands of 14,400 bps fax transmission and reception. PowerBook 100 users who experience problems during 14,400 bps faxing should limit their fax transmission speeds to 9600 bps by deselecting the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option in the Send Fax Setup dialog box. For a PowerBook 100 with a PowerPort/Mercury or PowerPort/Gold (MA) fax/modem installed, deselecting the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option also limits fax reception speed to 9600 bps.
Virtual Memory
Both virtual memory and 14,400 bps faxing require continual hard disk access. The hard disk demands of 14,400 bps faxing are easily met during normal PowerBook usage (with or without virtual memory). However, intensive virtual memory use ╤ combined with other background-intensive tasks, such as network access ╤ can cause virtual memory and faxing to compete for hard disk access. In this situation, virtual memory is always serviced first. The subsequent delay experienced by the PowerPort fax/modem can interfere with a fax in progress. Users experiencing problems during 14,400 bps faxing with virtual memory should either turn off Virtual Memory in the Memory control panel or deselect the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option in the Send Fax Setup dialog box.
Remote Fax Machine
The Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option should be selected whenever you send to or receive from another V.17 fax machine, so that you get maximum performance. If you deselect this option, your PowerPort fax/modem will send faxes at 9600 bps.
SETTING THE MODEM INITIALIZATION STRING
There are two non-volatile user profiles that are available for permanent storage of the configuration state. Internal modems for the PowerBooks save their configuration when the serial port closes, and they re-establish that state when the serial port is reopened. Thus, when you open one application, it will initially recognize the configuration state left by the last application to use PowerPort. In general, it is a good idea to use the modem initialization string AT&F1, which returns PowerPort to its factory default configuration. User profile 0 is used for automatic state preservation through power loss, as described above. User profile 1 is available for you to save configuration profiles. Note that ATZ loads user profile 0, and ATZ1 loads user profile 1.
For more information about AT commands and S-Registers, refer to the AT Command Reference for your fax/modem .
INTERNATIONAL DIALING
All dial strings used within the GlobalFax software (for registration and faxing) set the ╥time to wait for carrier╙ (S7 register) to 80 seconds to accommodate the long connect time associated with international calls. When dialing internationally from other telecommunication applications, you should include ╥S7=80╙ in your modem dial string to ensure that the modem will not time out while waiting for a carrier.
ZTERM
If you launch ZTerm by double-clicking on the ZTerm application, settings appropriate for connecting to the Global Village Bulletin Board (BBS) will be in place. Choose Global BBS from the ZTerm Dial menu and ZTerm will dial and connect with the Global Village BBS. Other ╥pre-configured╙ services include CompuServe Phone Numbers, DELPHI, and Genie.
If you launch ZTerm by double-clicking on the ZTerm document named ╥High Speed,╙ settings appropriate for high-speed (9600 bps or greater) modem communications with error correction and data compression will be in place. The settings affected are the following:
ZTerm: 19,200 bps serial port rate, hardware handshaking enabled
Modem: &F1
Refer to the ZTerm Documentation, located on your hard disk, for more information about ZTerm scripts and use of the Dial menu.
╩
Ñ The Global Village logo icon, which blinks over the Apple menu icon after a fax has been received, does not appear in the menu bar if the Macintosh is restarted after a fax has been received, but not yet viewed.
Ñ The AT modem commands ATB2 and ATB3, which select the V.23 modem option, work on PowerPort/Silver (MA), PowerPort/Gold (MA) and PowerPort/Mercury models only. Use the method described in ╥Send-Fax Setup╙ section if you need to check your PowerPort model.
Ñ When saving a fax document to an image file format (MacPaint, PICT, and so on), the current page orientation is not retained (as it is when you copy a selection to the Clipboard).
Ñ Although GlobalFax can receive up to 256 pages, it can not schedule or envelope faxes greater then 127 pages. Attempting to schedule or envelope a fax greater than 127 pages may cause a crash.
